French, Spanish and German translators needed…

We are looking for people who would be willing and able to translate texts from French, German and Spanish to English in November (and from English to other languages).

*What is this about? *

You have all heard that before this year ends, there will be two major political events at the international level – the WTO ministerial conference in Geneva in the end of November and the Copenhagen climate conference in the beginning of December. Critical perspectives and protest are needed on both occasions and in both places – and the voices of those that will be hit hardest by trade liberalisation and climate change must be heard. This is why, in the end of November/beginning of December a caravan of people that are part of grass-root movement and organizations in Asia, Latin America and Africa will travel from Geneva to Copenhagen to take part in the protests in Geneva and Copenhagen, to network, speak and take action together with movements in France, Germany, and Belgium on their way. The caravan will highlight that trade and climate, neoliberal globalisation and environmental destruction, change are closely connected. Caravan participants will be small farmers, indigenous people, small fishermen, from communities affected by environmental destruction or marginalised within their countries.

For public outreach of the caravan, we will compile a reader, containing, mainly, statements from the movements that will participate in the caravan, and some background information. While the reader will be printed in English only, we will also have a website where translations of as many of the texts as possible will be made available.
*
What is needed? *

As the reader is going to be in English, but the texts that we will receive from the movements from the Global South will be in English, Spanish or French we need people for translation to English. Moroever, some texts will likely have to be translated from German to English.

So – if you
+ can translate texts from Spanish, French or German to English
+ are a native English speaker and can proofread texts in English
+ have some time to dedicate to this, for translations roughly between 1-15st of November, and for proofereading the week after that
…. please get in touch. We cannot pay you, but appreciate your help!

Also, in order to give as many people as possible direct access to the texts, we also need translators from English to other languages – the texts will then be posted a the caravan website. Time frames here are more flexible, but sometime in November would be good.
*
How can I help?*

If you have a chance to contribute to this project – fantastic! Send an e-mail to Christiane in Berlin (lottaleben@gmx.net) and indicate from/to which languages you can translate and/or that you can proofread English texts. Please also let us know how much text we can send you to work on (A4 pages). We will get in touch.

If you  would like to know more about the caravan or support it in other ways, please contact Jürgen at havaria@gmx.de. For press inquiries contact Juliane at rayita@jpberlin.de.

A preliminary website is www.buko.info/caravan (German mostly), but our final website is going  to be up and running soon at www.climatecaravan.org.

We would be delighted to hear from you!

Urban Hravets: Pick some Apples and Pears

Leeds Urban Harvest is a voluntary run project that aims to collect and distribute varieties of soft fruits that grow unharvested around our city on trees and bushes in both public and private spaces.

Fruit is distributed to groups, volunteers and the local community.  Damaged fruits are turned into juice, preserves, jams and chutneys.  Any money raised is put back into the project to help with running costs.  We are also creating a detailed reference map of Leeds with location and tree information for future harvests, accessible to anyone.

As part of the project we aim to raise awareness of the great abundance of local tasty and healthy food that is available for everyone and for free.

Call 07760 141 822 to find out where we will be picking this sat.  Its the last one of the season, but watch out for pruning and grafting workshops!

Storytelling workshop

Dear Story-lovers and tellers great and small!

Some of you may already be aware of the free taster workshops that are taking place at the Leeds Central Library, as a part of a month long green-arts event called ‘Out of my Tree’. A programme can be obtained from our website under the logo below.

One workshop which isn’t included on the programme is the rearranged time of a storytelling workshop with recently Hebden bridge-based, and now Adelphi-story night resident, PETER FINDLAY. It shall be taking place on Monday 26th October at 2.30pm in Leeds Central Library. Bring an open ear and pen, learn some tricks of the trade and enjoy some jolly good tales!

All the best,

‘Out of my Tree’ x
