Cuts Café

31thJan-6th Feb

Come get some free tea, coffee and food and help facilitate open spaces, workshops and evening events.

Join us for a week of music, art, workshops, discussions and action focusing on the current ideology around Con-Dem government’s cuts and the privatisation of public and social services.

There will be discussions on education and the cuts, NHS and privatisation, austerity and the housing crisis and more…

So, the cuts cafe ball has been rolling and we thought we’d share what’s new. If you’ve got any suggestions or want to get involved, message me back.

What?

Cuts cafe is going to be an occupied space in the city centre that we’ll put to use with workshops, talks, art spaces, actions and entertainment. It’ll be open all week with tea and a space to chill as well as ongoing activites to engage with to help us explore the way the cuts are affecting Leeds, how we use public services and what the government spends our money on.

There will be a timetable of events published nearer the time which will include talks about the NHS, housing in Leeds, education and benefits, discussions on how we can learn from past and present resistance movements, a film night, games night, live music and a poetry slam (see here for more details: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=180840761947366 ). There will also be spaces to talk about how to organise collectively in Leeds.

Why?

We’re putting this on alongside the cuts agenda of the current government, trying to work out a response that looks to transform, not defend, the status quo. But hopefully more answers will emerge from discussions throughout the week.

Veggie Soc tea and cake party

Come show off your culinary prowess and bring your own vegetarian or vegan recipe cake (or cakes!) to the official LUU Vegetarian Food Society tea party!

Adamant that your non-dairy, egg-free, gluten-free, wheat-free, lovably freakish vegan cake is just as good as anything else out there? Well, now’s your chance to prove it, so get baking!

We will be providing plenty of tea and cakes of our own for the evening, but what would really make the event special would be if we had lots of different home-made cakes for everyone to have a go at! Even if you’ve never baked a cake in your life, just give it a try and let’s see the result! This is also a great way to get involved within the society and get to know members.

If you’d like to make cookies, scones, muffins or anything else baking-related, that’s good too! =]

That said, if you really don’t want to bake a cake, that’s perfectly fine too and you’re more than welcome to come along. We will merely request £2 for attendance, all money collected going towards future socials.

(You can also join the society on the night for only £3 – which will give you free entry to the next social! Membership gives you cheaper prices for socials, especially for the more expensive ones and will also give you access to members-only events.)

Hope to see you there!
Any questions, feel free to ask.
