AGM 2011

What is Green Action?
Green Action provides and promotes alternatives to conventional, commercial lifestyles. We have a food co-op, an allotment in Hyde Park and hold regular meetings to discuss other activities, such as workshops and other campaigns. Green Action aims to bring together people from diverse groups and point people towards alternative ways of living using both the network support of Radical Routes and the experiences of our varies members.

Did We Achieve Our Aims?

(A bit of guesswork on the aims – no copies…. oops)
– The new structure of meetings works well, especially the more social ones in the Packhorse.
– Outreach wasn’t great; some components of GA seen as slightly inclusive, due to lack of social meetings.

Aims for Next Year?

– perhaps working groups, or more hubs, in order to work specifically in the different parts of Green action, ie. food coop, allotment or campaigning groups. These groups could feed back at less frequent general meetings.
OR perhaps look at alternate practical ideas meetings, from which smaller meetings can be made to discuss individual ideas.
– Need to branch out through more publicity and involvement with other likeminded societies.
– We are part of political and campaigning group in Union – we need to constantly challenge our own perceptions of what GA is in order to keep it relevant.

Coordinator Roles

The coordinator roles are not jobs, but people who delegate all the necessary jobs relevant to each part of GA. In the words of Tim, they are "eternally optional roles."

What about Roles within Roles?
Question brought up about the idea of delegating jobs to certain shifts in the Co-op. Problem raised about the weight of all the cleaning on the afternoon shift. Question delayed to next meeting.

Plans for Coop?
Coop is on hold until after exams, and work will probably start on it again on the 20th May. Tim will send emails out. If anyone wants to access the stores, you need to ask Mark in essentials for the key.
Tim raised the idea of charging 10% discount on out of date stock rather than asking for donations in order to save money.

New Inductions
Tim introduced the idea of having a set of days at the beginning of next term to conduct detailed inductions to the coop. Perhaps at 6pm on the first 3 days of term.

Riley Smith Awards
GA was nominated for an Arc award, and the Riley awards are on Friday 6th May. Tickets were passed out to the group for whoever wants them.

Other points

FACEBOOK?

Question asked about GA presence on facebook. Idea of pulling feed from website onto the facebook page as present, but problem raised of having to channels of information and two points of call. At present, it seems like a ‘maybe not’, but issue delayed to another meeting.

MEMBERSHIP

Question raised about Membership cards. Current policy outlined: discretion of volunteer on shift, but works to the ‘sesame snap scale’ in which if the customer is making a large (especially personal) order, they must become a member.
Agreed that the new Coop should have a sign detailing a TBC membership term – idea raised of having a £2 limit. Moved again to next meeting.

GOOD NEWS!

Next two RR meetings: November, Manchester, or for the keen beans, August in Wales.

ALSO The union have agreed to lobby the university into becoming a Transition Towns University. WOO!

Edible Public Gardening!!!!

Hello all!

Following the good news of few weeks ago, we are now about to start gardening at Buslingthorpe Walk.

The BBC has also expressed an interest in supporting the project, so there might be more news in the next days!

Here are some dates (put them in your diary!) and some suggested activities, please come along and propose more if you like!

SATURDAY 14th MAY – afternoon, from 2pm onwards

designing the garden

cutting wood and setting up raised beds

planting herbs on the border

planting seeds and taking seeds at home, to get them ready for  planting in the next weeks

children & adults craftwork: designing and colouring animal and flower shapes on plywood (to put around raised beds and protect plants from dogs and ball games)

SATURDAY 4th JUNE – afternoon, from 2pm onwards

more of the above activites and more planting!

all Wednesdays evenings: as soon as the plants are in the soil, it will be fundamental to take care of them at least once a week (weeding, watering, etc.) So maybe would be good to have a weekly appointment, let’s say every wednesday after 6pm? (if more people can make another day, that would be good, just suggest one!)

If you have plants, compost, colours, wood that you don’t need, time to help preparing the above activities days, time to help publicize the project, PLEASE GET IN TOUCH with me!

Cheers
